MUAR, Jan 28 – The Rakyat must not fall for baseless claims by Pas that after giving out aid to the people under the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) programme, the government will increase income tax rates after the 13th General Election.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said such claims were baseless and meant to confuse and alarm the people.
“How many people in the country pay income tax? A large portion of the population do not pay tax. From the 27 million population, only one million pay income tax,” he told reporters after handing out BR1M aid to eligible recipients in Gersik/Kundang Ulu here today.
He said the opposition were alarmed with the kind of support received by the Barisan Nasional government which has been assisting the people to ease their burden all these years.
“They (Pas) know that the people are happy and confident with the steps taken by the BN government. As such, they (Pas) are willing to hurl such baseless accusations,” he said.
Muhyiddin said the BN government does not intend to burden the Rakyat but wished to help ease the burden of the people instead.
The Deputy Prime Minister reiterated that the BR1M was a sincere effort by the government to help low income earners.
He said the government had also been providing various forms of assistance throughout the years, including subsidy for fuel, food, 1Malaysia book vouchers, aid for school and many other forms of assistance at all levels.
Earlier, Muhyiddin had also attended the Pagoh Parliamentary 1Malaysia Prihatin Carnival organised by Puteri UMNO at Felda Sri Jaya.
Speaking at the carnival, he urged Puteri UMNO to enhance community activities to identify and solve problems faced by the people.
